About the Foundation
WHO WE ARE:
The Mary Beth Benison Foundation, Inc. is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, run by volunteer staff. The primary mission of the foundation is to provide financial assistance to ALS patients and families. In addition, we provide financial assistance to people with cancer and other serious illnesses.
Over a 15 year period Mary Beth overcame numerous health challenges but in 2014 she was diagnosed with two terminal illnesses, mesothelioma and ALS. Her ability to fight and remain strong through this devastating news was inspiring to many. Mary Beth often expressed how grateful she was to have the support of family and friends. She had tremendous compassion and knew how difficult it was when dealing with an illness and she wanted to find a way to help. The foundation was started as a way to continue her legacy of kindness, love and compassion.
WHAT WE DO:
The Mary Beth Benison Foundation grants typically provide assistance for the following expenses:

Reflections of MB
Submitted by her cousin Andrew "Jake" Cooney:
Mary Beth, my cousin, the first of the Benisons, was always the easiest person to talk to. I have memories of fun and funny Christmas Eves when she and her sidekick Megan along with Mike put up with all of us rugrats: Steve, Beth, Sean, Mary, Joey, me, Matt, Doug, Franny, Timmy, John, Erin and Katie. In and around the kitchen helping cook and set up, her personality was smart, witty and warm. The best of both Aunt Gin & Uncle Fran. Even though we didn’t see each other much throughout the year, whenever we did or talked on the phone, it was like easily opening a window on two cousin’s friendship. In recent years, Mary Beth continually shared a warmth and openness toward Marina and me and our lives. To me, her sincerity was reminiscent of Grandpa or Uncle Joe making quality time to talk to each one of us. She genuinely took the time and wanted to know what was going on with us. She cared about our health, physical, emotional and spiritual. We often talked about treating ourselves better whether it be with yoga or meditation, or just in general better accepting who we are.
Her spirit, or way of living and loving family, lives on with all of us. I see it when I look at the MB Road Race picture and the expression on the face of a young Timmy (Dagen) at the starting line, about to burst out ahead of the pack. I feel the same loyalty to Mary Beth that’s in his eyes and also see how knowing her has made us all better people.
